For pet lovers, dog and cat lovers alike, losing a lifelong companion can be one of the most difficult and deeply emotional experiences of life. Recently, I faced this myself when I lost my beloved black Labrador Retriever, Cameron, who had been by my side for 16 years. Adopted from Hope Animal Shelter in Hearne, Texas, Cameron came to me with a $100 discount because of his large size. In 2013, he even became a local celebrity, featured as the Santa Claus pet in the Robertson County News’ pet calendar.

Losing a pet who’s been by your side for 16 years can be utterly devastating. Yet, there is a way to ease some of that heartache and bring a sense of comfort. Even in the midst of loss, finding a thoughtful way to honor their memory can make things just a little easier and a little better.

But Happy Trails Pet Crematorium, created by Lindsey Hammond, is more than just a facility. It offers a thoughtful, compassionate service that goes far beyond what meets the eye. Lindsey ensures that from the care provided to the way each pet is honored, every farewell becomes deeply meaningful.

Now, most of you know Lindsey Hammond from Memorial Funeral Home in Hearne, Texas, but beyond advertisements, few have come to truly know these new services she offers. While I could list all the thoughtful ways she honors your pet, what I truly want to share is more about Lindsey herself, the kind of person who is handling these services for you with such care and integrity.

I could tell you that Lindsey is unique, different, funny, and loved by the community, and all of that is true. But what I truly want to share is that when you sit down with Lindsey Hammond to talk about your pet or loved one, she truly listens. She pays attention to what you need and genuinely cares about how your loved one is honored. That quality, her warmth and the comfort of her smile when you're distraught, is a rare gift. It outweighs any list of services, because that personal care is what makes all the difference.

Lindsey Hammond has performed funeral services for both my wife, Teresa, and my mother-in-law, Dorothy. Experiencing both of these losses within just 60 days was profoundly traumatic for my children and me. The care and attention provided at Memorial Funeral Home is immeasurable, and I can say with certainty that without Lindsey Hammond, my emotional state would have been in shambles. Her compassion and professionalism are what guided me through some of the hardest days of my life.

While losing a pet cannot be measured in the same way as losing loved ones, it is quite clear that those who know me understand how deeply I love dogs. I’ve raised pit bulls, Irish setters, Labradors, just about every type of dog you can imagine. I’ve had dogs for 12, 16 years, and longer. And while it’s different from losing a human loved one, it’s still a deeply impactful and often traumatic experience for any household.

I rarely write endorsement articles. In fact, in 30 years, I could count them on one hand. This one, however, is something I should have written long ago. I should have shared this with you far sooner. Lindsey’s services are not only invaluable to our community but also to the emotional well-being of every person who walks through Memorial Funeral Home or Happy Trails Pet Crematorium. I write this now to tell our community: we have an absolute treasure in Lindsey Hammond, and I’m grateful for the chance to finally say it.
